I am SO excited to introduce the inaugural 10-4-10 portion of Modern Icon. This is the segment where I ask 10 questions in 10 minutes to reveal the altruistic motivation behind the globally recognized personas in the public eye that we’ve come to respect and admire.

Being that this is my first 10-4-10 interview, I decided to ease into it and ask a friend of mine if I could pick his brain. Having been in the business as a successful actor for quite some time, and given the fact that he’s just a lovely human being, I found David Harewood a perfect victim… I mean, choice 😉 This interview holds a mix of fun questions and a meaningful message of hope and perseverance.

Lending his time and energy to bring awareness to a cause very close to his heart has been a privilege and a mission for him.

Starting out as a young, black, British actor, navigating through a narrow avenue and reaching a solid position in the entertainment business proved to be a rather rocky journey. And in his own words, nothing short of a miracle.

I have been lucky enough to work with David for the first season of CBS’ new show, Supergirl. He masterfully plays several different characters all rolled into one, indicative of his talent. He’s introduced as the Director of the DEO (Department of Extra-normal Operations), and my boss, “Hank Henshaw”. It’s not until later that Hank, in one of the coolest ways possible, reveals that he is actually a martian in disguise sent to fulfill a promise to protect Kara (Supergirl) and sister (the character I play) Alex Danvers. The DC universe has coined this martian as J’onn J’onzz a.k.a The Martian Manhunter. David’s portrayal is a powerful one.

He has personally donated his own stem cells to ACLT and has written a beautiful article about that process and what it meant to him.

With his success and recognition as an actor, utilizing his unique and positive position of influence on the world has been of the utmost importance. Lending his time and energy to bring awareness to a cause very close to his heart has been a privilege and a mission for him. He has been working closely with the Anthony Nolan organization in conjunction with ACLT (the African-Caribbean Leukemia Trust) in order to highlight the absolute necessity of donating precious stem cells to save lives of the African-Caribbean population who suffer from blood cancer. He has personally donated his own stem cells to ACLT and has written a beautiful article about that process and what it meant to him.

You can find that article by clicking on the following link. I strongly encourage you to read it as it shares his heart and desire to make a positive change in the world.
