I am incredibly thankful that my job means I can see films at the cinema without the financial burden, especially now, and I am thankful that we get films that aren’t necessarily mainstream releases either. On Friday, though, I watched The Woman King.
To be fair, I had high hopes from the single time I’d watched a trailer and saw that Viola Davis was the main character. It showed kick-ass female warriors doing their thing and fighting on the right side of history. It smashed those expectations within the first five minutes and it is one of the best films I’ve seen in a while. It is definitely on my favourite films of all time list, too.
I know my favourite films or films I believe are made incredibly well aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I urge you to check out the trailer for this one. It’s based off of true events in the 1800s and – in some places – is very difficult to watch (trigger warning for blood, gore, SA, rape – I have tried to include all I remember, but please still watch with caution or research beforehand). The absolute thrill though is hard to describe.
The cinematography, the score, the collectiveness of women and the sisterhood. I was on the edge of my seat multiple times and even let out an audible gasp (to which my manager who I was actually watching with off-shift at the time mirrored).
Viola Davis was stunning. Every single other cast member was stunning. It was an epic film full of twists and turns and fighting – physically and mentally – for freedom. Below is the trailer, as I could go on writing about how much I enjoyed this film for paragraphs and paragraphs. If you happen to watch, I’d love to hear what you think, even if you don’t enjoy it and actually despise it.
