This past weekend I watched The Menu and Armageddon Time.
Both were definitely worth watching (The Menu is gory and please check trigger warnings beforehand but it’s a good kind of bonkers). Armageddon Time was superb. It’s about a young boy growing up in the 80s and facing racism for the first time. He quickly becomes close friends with a young black boy, who he ultimately makes the same choices with, only to be punished completely differently.
It’s hard to watch (again, please check triggers), but incredibly moving and thought-provoking. Anthony Hopkins plays the loveable grandad in it who, from his own experiences and his parents’ experiences during the war, sparks this conversion between him and his grandson:
“Sometimes kids say bad words about the black kids.”
“And what do you do when that happens?”
“Well, obviously nothing, of course.”
“And do you think that’s smart?”The ending is one that made me smile and think ‘YES!!’, but it leaves it open in a way that makes you wonder about what the young boy goes on to do. Whatever it may be, due to the journey he goes through within the film, you just know it’s the right thing.
