I will never not know how lucky I am to have an independent cinema where I live and who I work for. We had 2 screenings this past weekend with Director Q&As, one for a Jack Cardiff (award-winning cinematographer who lived in my town for a few years) documentary, the other for a film called Typist Artist Pirate King. TAPK was, unfortunately, the only screening I could see that weekend. It was fabulous.
TAPK is a film about an artist and her life, touching heavily on mental health and how it’s perceived in the world (I believe it’s primarily focused on a form of Schizophrenia) and how we find the joys in life through creating, regardless of what people think. It’s bonkers, hilarious, hard hitting, emotional and hard to watch at points… but it was outstanding, and based on the life of a real person. It was even more interesting as we spent 30 minutes afterwards with the Director and Producer (I was taking photos, however, I still managed to hear most of the answers) speaking about the process of the film and beyond.
If you’re able to find it, I urge you to give it a watch (please do check trigger warnings before or feel free to message me).
