This post could go either here or in the reading group, but given the content I figured here would work best.
I’m a fanfic writer so I am always on the lookout for books related to fanfiction. Not necessarily other people’s stories/written fanfics, but books that discuss fanfiction. So on a random Amazon search, this one came up:
“Loving FanFiction: Exploring The Role Of Emotion In Online Fandoms” by Brit Kelley.
This is an academic text which is the type of book I was looking for since there aren’t many out there. You’d think there would be given that fanfiction has been around for decades.
The book talks about ‘the emotion within the context of fandoms, specifically online fanfiction’. The topic sounded quite interesting and very relatable. I’ve been writing FF since I was 12 and have grown an emotional attachment to what I write. In the introduction the book even mentions how fanfic writers “celebrate yet are often shamed for” their “strong emotional attachments they have with their fan objects.” I found that interesting because I’ve been there. I’ve been called obsessed over the fandoms I write for. I mean heck, I even keep a spreadsheet/s of all of the fanfics I write per year. Some years are better than others and when they’re bad I get disappointed.
I look forward to delving more into this book.
